Mission Overview[]

The gang prepare to rob the bank in Saint Denis as one final score that would allow them to retire.

Story[]

In order to fund their escape overseas and retirement from the life of crime, the gang prepare for one last job: robbing Lemoyne National Bank in Saint Denis. Although the robbery starts off well, Pinkertons quickly arrive on the scene. Hosea is held hostage after being captured by Agent Milton during the distraction that he orchestrated. Knowing that Hosea had not and would not agree to his deal of handing over Van der Linde, Milton decides to kill him, doing so with a shot to the chest. A shootout ensues between the gang and the Pinkertons.

With the gunfight unwinnable, Dutch has Arthur plant dynamite on the wall inside the bank, allowing the outlaws to escape to the rooftop and escape. While the rest of the gang are escaping, John is captured alive by Pinkertons and later sent to Sisika Penitentiary to be incarcerated. Along with this, Lenny is killed by Pinkerton gunmen during the escape on the rooftops. The remaining six - Dutch, Arthur, Micah, Bill, Javier and Charles - hide in an abandoned apartment and wait until night to escape. Dutch decides to escape on a boat and leave the country, so the six proceed to the docks. Along the way, Charles distracts some Pinkerton guards and allows the other five to enter a boat bound for the South Pacific.

Gold Medal Objectives[]

  • Crack the safe without making any mistakes.
  • Complete using only sidearms.
  • Get 25 headshots.
  • Complete the mission without taking any health items.

Tips[]

  • If you are attempting to get the Gold Rush trophy/achievement, consider using these tactics:
    • Cracking the bank safe can be frustrating. The combination never changes but the controls to spin the dial can be unreliable. The combination is always 19, 72, 54. You should spin counterclockwise to 19 and it seems to click into place a bit early maybe 17-19. You then spin clockwise back across 0 to get to 72. You seem to get this tumbler to click into place between 74-72. You then spin counterclockwise back across 0 to get to 54. The problem is that all of the leeway you get with the other two numbers seems to not work with 54. Instead of being in the 52-54 range, it seems to click between 54-56. Most times it just doesn't click and you have now failed the objective. The game will let you continue to spin around to 54 again and it seems to drop easily where it should opening the safe but this is a failure. On any of the three numbers, you can't spin past the number or you fail.
    • After cracking a safe, you should consider doing this mission with your satchel full of Dead Eye tonics and ammunition for your sidearms. Trying to replay the mission on 1.00 can be difficult as you get no tonics, default cores and limited ammo. It is possible to loot the two guards in the bank that your gang knocks out but it's random loot. Anything health based will fail health tonic achievements.
    • After Dutch shouts you to come to him you can ignore his requests and continue shooting for the headshot objective without failing this mission.
    • Make sure to immediately change back to your sidearm before climbing the ladders to the roof or you will fail sidearm objective.
    • Checkpoint restarts will fail no health items requirement. Take the time to watch a video playthrough to familiarize yourself with the three problem areas. Running up to the train, you need to stay crouched or you will be seen. Inside of the

Deaths[]

  • Hosea Matthews - Killed by Agent Milton outside the bank, for his crimes over the years and not agreeing to the deal that Milton tried to make with the gang.
  • Lenny Summers - Killed by Pinkerton gunmen during the gang’s escape on the rooftops.
  • Multiple Pinkerton agents - Killed by various members of the Van der Linde gang during the robbery.

Mission Failure[]

The mission will fail if the player:

  • Assaults, kills, abandons, or aggravates any members of the gang;
  • Kills Lenny or Hosea before their scripted deaths;
  • Abandons or attacks the convoy;
  • Alerts the law prematurely;
  • Kills the bank manager;
  • Kills or alerts any Pinkertons after the shootout;
  • Kills any of the gang's horses;
  • Kills or abandons their horse;
  • Dies.

Background Music Played in the Mission[]

  • "Banking, The Old American Art" - Played when the Van der Linde gang are riding on the way to Saint Denis, and during a heist gone horribly wrong.

Trivia[]

  • Lenny Summers' death in this mission is the only gang related death to happen outside of a cutscene in Red Dead Redemption 2.
    • It is also impossible to save him as the two Pinkerton agents who shoot him cannot be killed until Lenny has died.
  • The gang members do not wear their usual outfits in this mission; they are all dressed in smart suits instead. This is because a group of men in business dress riding into a city would be less likely to arouse suspicion than a posse of armed men in rugged, outdoorsman clothes.
  • After reaching the roof of the building adjacent to the bank the player can jump down into a backyard and make their way through some alleys to the area in front of the bank, where Hosea's body can be looted. He has nothing special on him though, just random possessions.
  • When escaping the authorities at the end of the mission, the gang departs on a vessel named Antenor. Antenor was the name of five British steamships, the first two of which were built in 1872 and 1896, respectively. The name generally stems from the figure in Greek mythology who was a counselor to King Priam during the Trojan War. Appearing in both The Iliad and The Aeneid, Antenor became known in many versions of the Trojan War story for betraying Troy to the Greeks, fleeing the city's ultimate destruction, or attempting to build various new cities. The name is further referenced in Dante's Inferno, in which part of the deepest level of hell is named "Antenora" as a special place reserved for traitors of the fatherland.
  • It was possible to kill all the gang members without failing the mission by shooting at the wagon in the front at a certain spot in the back with a Shotgun loaded with incendiary rounds. The driver would get off the wagon and stop, messing up the gang members AI and making them stop. The player could kill them by throwing fire bottles at them, although doing this would disallow completion of the mission.
    • This glitch was fixed in patch 1.14.
  • While there are some minor differences (longer, slightly different coloured-coat etc.), the suit John Marston wears in this mission bears a heavy resemblance to the Elegant Suit in Red Dead Redemption. He is also seen wearing it at his wedding eight years later.
  • Right before the gunfight begins, both Dutch and Arthur's bandanas disappear. Neither of them will regain them for the remainder of the mission.
  • This mission will automatically continue into the cutscene-only mission "Lost and Not Quite Found".
  • If the player is not already carrying a longarm, Javier will toss them a Lancaster Repeater as they head for the rooftop.
    • Despite being given by Javier, the weapon is actually the player's own Lancaster Repeater and will carry over any upgrades or customisations already applied to this weapon.
  • Despite Dutch's calls for help and the gang's insistence that the gunfight is unwinnable, the player can shoot Pinkertons for as long as they want.
    • Conversely, shooting at the Pinkertons after they kill Hosea is optional and the player can simply hide behind the counter and wait for Dutch to prepare the dynamite without shooting a single bullet while inside the bank.
  • Arthur and Javier wear the same outfits they wore in "A Fine Night of Debauchery"; Arthur wears The Wittemore and Javier wears a fancy suit.
  • After fleeing from the law using the rooftops nearby, Dutch and the rest of his gang escape thanks to a broken window on a building. Dutch is frustrated and doesn't know what to do until he sees an opportunity. Dutch says: "I got it... A boat!" He sees two paintings depicting ships in the room they are in and decides to use that as a plan, even though it seems as if he were smart enough to come up with a plan on the run in the eyes of his gang. Dutch is known for his habit of attempting to solve problems with the first solution he comes up with, even if the solution or plan is likely to fail. In the prologue mission, "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?", this habit is shown well.
  • Once overseas, Bill asks Dutch if he reckons "they'll (the Pinkertons) follow us to Cuba?", to which Dutch replies with: "Like Colonel Waxman on a jolly?" This is a reference to the battle won recently at San Juan Hill, Guarma, which was led by former senator Thaddeus Waxman, who arrived at the island with the help of a small military boat, sometimes referred to as a "jolly".
