What happens if I take 2 loratadine? ›

The maximum recommended dose of loratadine is 10 mg taken once daily. Taking more than the maximum dose may result in increased side effects such as tiredness or headache.

Loratadine is unlikely to do you any harm if you take it for a long time. However, it's best to take it only for as long as you need to.

For allergic rhinitis:

In adolescents, adults, and geriatrics: 10 mg by mouth daily or 5 mg twice daily; do not exceed 10 mg in 24 hours. In pediatrics: age 2 to 5: 5 mg orally every day; over the age of 6: 10 mg orally daily. The ODT formulation is not recommended for younger children.

Loratadine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Adults and children 6 years of age and older—One tablet or 10 milligrams (mg) once a day. Do not take more than one tablet per day. Children younger than 6 years of age—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

You should not double up on antihistamines or take two different types in one day, unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so. Antihistamine dosage is based on rigorous testing, and exceeding the recommended daily amount can cause unintended side effects like hallucinations or seizures.

Allergists recommend long-acting, non-sedating antihistamines — ones that won't make you sleepy — for everyday use. Though you may know them by their brand names, the generic versions tackle the same problems: Cetirizine (Zyrtec®, Aller-Tec®, Wall-Zyr®). Fexofenadine (Allegra®, Aller-ease®, Aller-Fex®, Wal-Fex®).

You can take it at any time of the day, morning or night.

Zyrtec. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is the strongest of the second-generation antihistamines, says Dr. Garcia-Ibáñez. And because there is less chance of toxicity with this medication, the dosage can be increased substantially, at the discretion of your doctor, he says.

While the exact mechanism is not understood, people do sometimes report decreasing effectiveness of some allergy medications. It also may be that your allergies have changed. Your body's reaction to certain allergens can change over time, which means the medications you were taking might not be as effective.

What to avoid when taking loratadine? ›

Loratadine does not usually cause drowsiness when used at recommended doses. However, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Loratadine does not raise blood pressure. Loratadine (Claritin) should be safe for most high blood pressure or heart disease patients. However, combination products such as Claritin-D or loratadine D. contain the decongestant pseudoephedrine which can raise your blood pressure.
