Melancholia

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Melancholia's dramatic tricks are more obvious than they should be, but this is otherwise a showcase for Kirsten Dunst's acting and for Lars von Trier's profound, visceral vision of depression and destruction.

Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Melancholia (2011) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Lisa Rosman indieWire In Melancholia, von Trier has created a mission statement of a masterpiece, one that reminds us that nihilism itself can serve as a legitimate form of creation, a means as well as The End. Webb V If you can make it through the first 6 minutes, you are a far sader person than I.Caution: If you have ever entertained ending it all, AVOID MELANCHOLIA like you would avoid a zombie horde. Watching it may give you cause to want to fine a zombie horde. It's a wedding movie about a non-wedding. More than lilkely it's about undiagniosed mental disorders afflicting European Directors, and actors with bills to pay.Do yourself a favor and read Worlds in Collision by Velikovsky. Though it will not be any easier to understand than this movie, it does have much more action.Gave it half a start due to Stockholm syndrome affect. That said, the beautiful opening sequence, the intensity of the very long wedding-reception scene and the wonderful cinematography are endearing aspects of the film. I see some have criticized the film for the inaccuracies of the physics related to the collision with Melancholia. I'm pretty sure that they are missing the point of the film -- there is no literal moment of Earth apocalypse. The collision is just meant to be taken as metaphorical of how marriage (or adulthood or mental illness) brings an end to the individual. This is the sort of film that is unpleasant to sit through but leaves you with a long-lasting impression. It would have been a better film if it had been less unpleasant to sit through. Nevertheless AMAZING visuals and acting, watched this six months ago and still thinking about it regularly.
