FAQ: University Place Wi-Fi access point installation

Residents of UniversityPlace,

As part of our continuous improvement effort, we will be enhancing Wi-Fi access in UniversityPlace by installing Wi-Fi access points in student rooms during Winter Break 2021-2022. We are requesting your assistance to make the installation as efficient as possible.

Question: “Which student rooms are affected”?
Answer: A Wi-Fi access point will be installed in every University Placestudent room.

Question: “What do I need to do to prepare”?
Answer: Our technicians will require access to the network connection boxes in your room. If you currently have any furniture blocking the connection boxes, you must move it at least 3ft. away and provide a clear path for the technicians.

Question: “What does the network connectionbox look like”?
Answer:University Place student rooms have two connection boxes (7w”x8h”x2d”) mounted in the middle of the wall on opposite sides of the room. The bottom of the box has a cable TV connector and a green Ethernet jack as well as an inactive red jack. Please be sure to clear a path so our technicians have access to both boxes in your room.

Question: “Who will be in my room”?
Answer: All technicians performing the work will be accompanied by a university staff member while in your room. Wi-Fi access point installation takes about 20-30 minutes per room.

Question: “Where will the Wi-Fi access point be mounted”?
Answer:One of the network connection boxes in your room will be removedand a Wi-Fi access point installed in its place. The other connection box will remain as is.

Question: “Will I lose my cable TV and Ethernet jack”?
Answer:YES and NO. The cable TV connector will go away, so please plan on using the connector on the otherside of your room. Although the Ethernet jack will also go away, there are three Ethernet jacks on the Wi-Fi access point you can use if you require a wired network connection.

ResNet WiFi requires that you register your device. (Device registration was previously not required in University Place.) Onlaptops and smartphones, simply open a browser. If the deviceis unregistered, you should be automatically redirected to aregistration page. Game consoles, smart TVs and other browserless devices need to be manually registered.

Question: “Which student rooms are affected”?
Answer: A Wi-Fi access point will be installed in every Deatrick Hall student room except 118S, 218S, 318S, 418S, 518S and 618S.

Question: “What do I need to do to prepare”?
Answer: Our technicians will require access to the network wall plate on the right side your room. If you currently have any furniture blocking the wall plate, you must move it at least 3ft. away and provide a clear path for the technicians.

Question: “What does the network wall plate look like”?
Answer: The wall plate is mounted to small outlet box (5”x5”x3”) about 18” from the floor. It includes a cable TV connector and a green Ethernet jack as well as an inactive red jack. Please note that although there are two network wall plates in your room — one on each side — our technicians only need access to the wall plate on the right side of the room.

Manual device registration: Locating the MAC address of your network device

To connect a browser-less device (e.g. Xbox, Apple TV, PlayStation, Alexa...) to WiFi, you first need to manually register the device's MAC address. Manual device registration is currentlyrequired in all residence halls exceptDeatrick Hall andUniversity Place.

If you knowthe MAC address of your device:

1. From acomputer, tablet or smartphone, log into the Self-Registration Portaland add your device. (Note: The Self-Registration Portal is only accessible from the ResNet network.)
2. When connectingyour device to the network, be sure to select ResNet WiFi from the list of available wireless networks.

If you don't know the MAC address of your device:

The section below shows you how to locatethe MAC address of various devices. If your device isn't listed below, or if you're having trouble finding it, please contact the ResNet helpdesk for assistance. Once you know the MAC address of your device, follow the steps above to register it.

Amazon Echo

1. Fromthe Amazon Alexa app, set up your Echo device and connect to ResNet WiFi.
2. From the Amazon Alexa app main menu, select Settings.
3. Select your Echo device.
4. Select About (at the bottom of the page).
5. Locate Mac Address.

AmazonFire TV

1. Plug your Amazon Fire stick into your TV.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select System.
4. Select About.
5. Select Network.
6. Locate MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

Apple TV

1. From the main menu, select Settings.

Google Home

1. Before you arrive on campus, open the Google Home app on your phone/tablet/computer.
2. Tap the Google Home icon.
3. Tap the Settings icon.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the window and locate the MAC address. Take a screenshot or write down the MAC address and bring it to campus.
5. When you arrive on campus, register your device through the Self-Registration Portal as described above.
6. Factory-reset your Google Home (hold down the reset button on the bottom of the device until you hear the chime).
7. Connect your phone/tablet/computer to ResNet WiFi.
8. Open the Google Home app on your phone/tablet/computer and set up your device.

Note: If you're already on campus and don't know the MAC address of your Google Home, please contactResNet. We have a workaround that enables you to locate the MAC address in order to register the device.

Nintendo 3DS

1. From the Home menu, select System Settings.
2. Select Internet Settings.
3. Select OtherInformation.
4. Select Confirm MAC Address.
5. Locate MAC Address.

Nintendo Switch

1. From the Home menu, select System Settings.

NintendoWii

The Nintendo Wii is not compatible with ResNet WiFi. However, you can use a standard USB-to-Ethernet adapter and connect your Wii to the wired network.

1. On the Wii Channel screen, select the Wii button.

4. Select ConsoleInformation.
5. Locate USB Ethernet Adapter MAC Address or LAN Adapter MAC Address.

Problem: "I already registered my iPhone on ResNet WiFi. Why won't it stay connected?"

Apple unveiled a "private address" feature in iOS 14 toenhance security. This feature tells the device to use a different, random MAC (media access control) address for each Wi-Fi network it connects to.By default, the private address feature is enabled on devices running iOS 14.

This creates a problem on networks like ResNet WiFi because registered devices are identified by their MAC address. If your device chooses a different MAC address the next time it connects, you'll be asked to re-register.

Fortunately you can disable the private address feature by going to Settings -> Wi-Fi-> ResNet WiFi:

It's a good idea to turn off the private address feature for ResNet WiFi,BearNet and BearNet Secure to avoid having to re-register your device.

Problem: "I already registered my iPhone on ResNet WiFi. Why won't it stay connected?"

Getting Connected: WiFi setup in the residence halls

PCs, Macs, Mobile Devices

Step #1:JOIN OPEN NETWORK(ResNet WiFi)

• Select ResNet WiFi from the list of available networks. A registration page may appear automatically. If the registration page doesn’t appear, open a browser and go to: http://resnetsupport.kutztown.edu.

Step #2:REGISTER YOUR DEVICE (This step is NOT required in Deatrick Hall or University Place)

• Enter your KU username (e.g. sgrif456) and password to register your device.

Step #3:JOIN SECURENETWORK(BearNet Secure)

• A few seconds after registering your device, you’ll see the secure WiFi configuration page. Click ‘JoinNow’ and follow the online instructions to install the necessary security profile.
• Although this step is not required, we recommend connecting to BearNet Secure on devices that support it.

All OtherDevices

To connect your Xbox, Playstation, Apple TV, Smart TV, Amazon Echo, Amazon Firestick, Roku, etc. to thewireless network, follow the steps below. (Please note that Google Chromecast and Google Home devices, as well as most wireless printers,are designed for small home networks and will not work on ResNet WiFi. If you have a printer, we recommend using a standard USB printer cable directly connected to your computer.)

Step #1: FIND THE MAC (WIFI) ADDRESS OF YOUR DEVICE

• Locate the MAC Address (or Wireless ID) of your device. You can usually find the MAC Address in your device'snetwork settings. Check here for specific device instructions, or contact the ResNet Helpdesk for assistance.

Step #2: REGISTER YOUR DEVICE(This step is NOT required in Deatrick Hall or University Place)

• Once you've located the MAC Address, log into the Self-Registration Portaland add your device. (The Self-Registration Portal is only available from the residence halls.)

Step #3: JOIN OPEN NETWORK(ResNet WiFi)

• When connecting your device, select ResNet WiFi from the list of available wireless networks.Registrations expire at the end of the academic year.

Step #1:JOIN OPEN NETWORK(ResNet WiFi)

• Select ResNet WiFi from the list of available networks. A registration page may appear automatically. If the registration page doesn’t appear, open a browser and go to: http://resnetsupport.kutztown.edu.

Step #2:REGISTER YOUR DEVICE (This step is NOT required in Deatrick Hall or University Place)

• Enter your KU username (e.g. sgrif456) and password to register your device.

Step #3:JOIN SECURENETWORK(BearNet Secure)

• A few seconds after registering your device, you’ll see the secure WiFi configuration page. Click ‘JoinNow’ and follow the online instructions to install the necessary security profile.
• Although this step is not required, we recommend connecting to BearNet Secure on devices that support it.

All OtherDevices

To connect your Xbox, Playstation, Apple TV, Smart TV, Amazon Echo, Amazon Firestick, Roku, etc. to thewireless network, follow the steps below. (Please note that Google Chromecast and Google Home devices, as well as most wireless printers,are designed for small home networks and will not work on ResNet WiFi. If you have a printer, we recommend using a standard USB printer cable directly connected to your computer.)

Step #1: FIND THE MAC (WIFI) ADDRESS OF YOUR DEVICE

• Locate the MAC Address (or Wireless ID) of your device. You can usually find the MAC Address in your device'snetwork settings. Check here for specific device instructions, or contact the ResNet Helpdesk for assistance.

Step #2: REGISTER YOUR DEVICE(This step is NOT required in Deatrick Hall or University Place)

• Once you've located the MAC Address, log into the Self-Registration Portaland add your device. (The Self-Registration Portal is only available from the residence halls.)

Step #3: JOIN OPEN NETWORK(ResNet WiFi)

• When connecting your device, select ResNet WiFi from the list of available wireless networks.Registrations expire at the end of the academic year.

BearNet Secure: Instructions for iOS (version 12.2 and later)

Note: The instructions below are only for devices running iOS 12.2 or later. If your iOS device is running an earlierversion, go herefor the correct instructions.

1. Connect your wireless device to an open network like ResNet WiFi or BearNet.

2. Open a brower and go to resnet.kutztown.edu/securewifi.Enter your KU username and password and click JoinNow. (Note: Be sure to enter your KU username and NOT your entire KU email address.)

3. A security profile is downloaded to your device. When computer, you'll see the message "Profile Downloaded".

4. Open the Settings app and tap Profile Downloaded.

5. TapInstall in the upper-right corner and follow the onscreen instructions.

6. When your device has finishedgenerating a security key, enrolling the certificate and installing the profile, click Done.

7. Your iOS device should switch automatically to BearNet Secure. If it doesn't, open the Settings app and manuallychange your WiFi network to BearNet Secure.
